Shanghai Masters 2024: Rain delays have been playing havoc with the schedule of the Shanghai Masters, but as of October 8, the Round of 32 was completed.
In the last few days, incessant rain has forced the organizers of the Shanghai Masters 2024 to push ahead matches scheduled to be held in the open courts, so much so that as of October 8, the Round of 32 was just being completed. This means that between October 9 and 10, both the Round of 16 and the Quarter-finals will have to be held in quick succession, so that the semi-finals and final go as per schedule on October 11 and October 13 and allow the players much needed rest days.
Tommy Paul, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev secured Round of 16 spots on Sunday, with all but Alcaraz taken the distance in three-set matches. In fact, Paul, Sinner and Medvedev all dropped the first set and then went on to win their respective encounters.
Monday, October 7, was reserved for the Round of 64 matches that had to be pushed ahead owing to inclement weather, with the rest of the Round of 32 matches then held on October 8. It was smooth sailing for most of the men with straight set victories, except Gael Monfils, Jakub Mensik, Roman Safiullin, David Goffin and Alexander Zverev. Safiullin, ranked 61, stunned Frances Tiafoe to set up an encounter with 4-time champ, Novak Djokovic.
