In the second semi-final clash between South Africa and Australia in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023, the Proteas won the toss and elected to bat, adhering to their established strategy. However, their plan encountered obstacles as they lost early wickets, reaching 24 for 4, with Temba Bavuma (0), Quinton de Kock (3), Rassie van der Dussen (6), and Aiden Markram (10) struggling to make an impact.

Following the early setbacks, Heinrich Klaasen (47) and David Miller made efforts to rejuvenate the innings. However, their partnership was interrupted when the former batter was bowled by Travis Head.

Despite Miller's determined century, the subsequent batters — Marco Jansen (0), Gerald Coetzee (19), and Keshav Maharaj (4) — failed to provide substantial support.

Kagiso Rabada made a late effort to enhance the score but was dismissed for 10 in the final over. To compound matters, rain disrupted play at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

In reaction to these events, fans revived the hashtag "chokers" on social media, a label linked with South Africa in previous tournaments, with Australia playing a significant role in crafting this narrative.

The Proteas concluded their first innings with a score of 212 all-out in 49.4 overs overs. To secure a spot in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 final against India, they will need a formidable bowling performance.
