Team Europe is on the backfoot heading into Day 3; can Alcaraz, Medvedev and co turn the tide around?

It’s Day 3 of the 2024 Laver Cup, and as things stand, after 2 days of scintillating tennis between Team World and Team Europe, the former is likely to take the trophy home for a third consecutive time. The 3-day tournament, which began on September 20 at the Uber Platz in Berlin, Germany, has Team World poised to win yet again, having won three of the matches on day 2 and leading 8-4 against Team Europe.

Laver Cup 2024 Day 2 result round-up: Team Europe or Team World points, who is on verge of winning the tournament?

5 points is all that the John McEnroe-led team needs for victory, and on Day 3, every match carries 3 points. Will they close it out in the first session or will audiences get to see more tennis action as the day goes by? There are 2 scheduled matches – 1 doubles and 1 singles, which will end the tournament if, say, Team World wins both of them. But should Team Europe make a resurgence, then, there will be a couple of additional matches, as the case may be.

Day 3 will begin with a doubles match, featuring Team Europe’s Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud against Team World’s Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. Alcaraz played the doubles on opening day with Alexander Zverev and had lost to Shelton and Taylor Fritz. Shelton, interestingly, is the only player to have played all the doubles matches for his team.

The official schedule lists the singles match that follows the doubles as an ‘if required’ event, but given that Team World will be at 11 points only, if they win the doubles, this match will, most definitely happen. The rest of the schedule will depend on the outcome of these 2 matches.
