Laver Cup 2024 Day 1 result round-up: On Day 1 of the 2024 Laver Cup, three single matches and one doubles was played, none of which went past a second set.

How are Team Europe and Team World placed after 4 matches on Day 1

In the first match of the tournament, Team Europe’s Casper Ruud faced Team World’s Francisco Cerundolo. John McEnroe’s Team World is the defending champions, with the veteran player saying he wants to take the trophy home yet again. In keeping with that, Cerundolo won the first match, 6-4 6-4, earning the first point of the day.

After that initial loss, Team Europe was determined to put that behind them and get some points on the board. The second singles match between Stefanos Tsitsipasis and Thanasi Kokkinakis went the former’s way, with a score of 6-1 6-4 in only an hour and 20 minutes.

The third singles match for the day between Grigor Dimitrov of Team Europe and Team World’s Alejandro Tabilo was much harder fought one, going into tie-breaker in both sets and Dimitrov taking the point eventually. The score was 7-6 7-6.

The final match for the day was a biggie – French Open and Wimbledon Champion Carlos Alcaraz, French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev, US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton were on court for a doubles event. Alcaraz and Zverev fought back from a break down to take the first set to a tie-breaker, but Fritz and Shelton got the better of them. The match went to Team World, 7-6 6-4.

At the end of Day 1, both teams were evenly poised with 2 points each. The points system of the Laver Cup gives each winning team 1 point each on Day 1, 2 on Day 2 and 3 on Day 3. The first team to reach 13 points is adjudged winner. If the teams end up tied at 11 points each, after 12 matches, a doubles match will be played on Day 3. The schedule of play has been planned to ensure that each of the six players on the teams gets to play a single match

Team Europe includes Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov, while Team World has Frances Tiafoe, Alejandro Tabilo, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Francisco Cerundolo, Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz.

The Laver Cup, an invitational tournament instituted by Roger Federer in honour of Rod Laver, is being held at the Uber Platz in Berlin, Germany. The broadcast for the three-day event, that features 12 tennis players split in two teams, is Sony Network in India, with live stream available on SonyLIV.
