The Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction 2024 is breaking new ground as it ventures outside India for the first time, taking place in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19. However, that's not the only historic moment for IPL 2024. In a milestone for the league's 16-year history, Mallika Sagar becomes the 1st female auctioneer to wield the gavel, succeeding Hugh Edmeades. In previous IPL auctions, Richard Madley, Charu Sharma, and Hugh Edmeades had officiated as auctioneers.

The IPL 2024 auction is set for December 19 at 1 PM IST at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The auction will be broadcast on the Star Sports network and streamed online through Jio Cinema in India.

A total of 333 participants—comprising 214 Indian players and 119 foreign players—will compete for a maximum of 77 spots.

Who is Mallika Sagar?

Mallika Sagar holds an art history degree from Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia. Based in Mumbai, she is an art collector and consultant with a particular interest in Indian art.

Having conducted auctions for the Women's Premier League (WPL) on two occasions, Mallika Sagar began her career as the first female auctioneer in 2001 at Christie's, a renowned British auction house.

While her recent involvement in the WPL marked her cricket auction debut, Mallika Sagar had previously participated in sports auctions. Making history, she broke barriers by conducting the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) auction in 2021, becoming the first female auctioneer in league history.
