IND vs SL: Indian top order collapse inspires memes galore thanks to Dunith Wellalage

After an impressive display with the bat against Pakistan the previous day, the Indian top order, comprising Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul, faced a formidable challenge in Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage. In their second Super 4 match of the Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo, Wellalage proved to be India's main tormentor, claiming a 5-fer.

Wellalage initiated his onslaught by dismissing Gill, who was bowled out for 19 runs. Subsequently, he struck again, sending the previous match's centurion, Virat Kohli, back to the pavilion after just scoring 3 runs. Rohit Sharma, the skipper, was his next victim, bowled out for 53 runs. His most recent wicket was another centurion, KL Rahul, who was dismissed for 39 runs.

The top-order collapse at the hands of a single spinner inspired an abundance of memes on social media platforms, particularly on X (previously known as Twitter).

Talking about the clash, as of writing this article, India after opting to bat, managed to score 174/6 in 37 overs. Ishan Kishan was sent back for 33 runs while Hardik Pandya was dismissed by Wellalage for 5.

Ravindra Jadeja (3) and Axar Patel have a huge responsibility to try and steady the innings.
