French Open 2024: Carlos Alcaraz beats Jannik Sinner; books spot in first Roland Garros final

On June 7, the first semi-final between World No.1 Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz was quite the roller-coaster ride that could have gone either way, with the latter prevailing at the end of a 4-hour-long hard fought 5-set match. Alcaraz is the first player in the Open Era to make it to finals on all three surfaces before turning 22.

Not long after, Zverev, playing his fourth successive semi-final at Roland Garros, took on two-time runner up Casper Ruud. This time, the German was determined to break his French Open jinx, and after a shaky start, turned things around to close out the match in 4 sets.

Alcaraz vs Zverev head-to-head; predictions

The duo has played each other 9 times earlier, with Zverev having a slight edge at 5:4 head-to-head victories. However, their last encounter in the quarterfinal of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells had gone in favour of Alcaraz. This was a best of three match that Alcaraz won in straight sets.

At Roland Garros, both men have met earlier, when the 2022 quarter-final went in Zverev's favour. Alcaraz then returned the favour at the 2023 US Open, beating Zverev in the quarter-final.

Heading into the French Open, experts say that both Alcaraz and Zverev are quite evenly poised. Both have immense strengths that could come into play in the final on Sunday, like Alcaraz’ impressive drop shots and Zverev’s ace count, for instance. Alcaraz is predicted to win with the match likely to go into the decider.
