Only one quarter-final will be held on June 5

June 5 was when the remaining two semi-finalists of the 2024 French Open were to be decided. But as it turns out, one has already sealed a spot with a walkover. The first match of the day was supposed to be between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud, but late on Tuesday evening, Djokovic’s team announced that he was withdrawing from the tournament owing to an injury he sustained during his Round 4 match.

In the pursuit of defending his French Open title, Djokovic had two lengthy 5-set matches, including in Round 4, during which he slipped and sustained a tear in his right medial meniscus. Djokovic had powered through the match on very potent painkillers, but once the extent of the injury became clear, he had no choice but to excuse himself. The injury is likely to keep him out of Wimbledon as well and maybe even the Paris Olympics.

Rudd will, therefore, meet the winner of the Alexander Zverev vs Alex de Minaur match on Friday. Rudd is the 2022 and 2023 French Open runner-up, losing to Rafael Nadal and Djokovic, respectively. He will fancy another shot at the title this year.

The second match is currently scheduled for 11.45 pm (IST). It remains to be seen if it will be advanced to an earlier slot. Djokovic’s withdrawal from the French Open 2024 means that whoever clinches the title on June 9 will take it home for the first time. In the last 20 years, Nadal won it 14 times and Djokovic 4 times. Barring Ruud, none of the other semi-finalists have even played in a final at Roland Garros.
