The women’s singles French Open final in Roland Garros on June 8 presents a David and Goliath situation; only this time, Goliath has the upper hand to win. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, playing her fourth French Open final in a tournament she has won thrice already, will take on Jasmine Paolini, whose career best at a Grand Slam was a fourth round at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Head-to-head; prediction

Swiatek and Paolini have played each other twice before, with the former winning both with comprehensive margins. At the 2022 US Open, Swiatek won 6-3 6-0, while at the WTA Prague Open in 2018 it was 6-2 6-1. Swiatek is the hot favourite to win and take home a fourth French Open title. She is expected to win in straight sets.

Swiatek in top form

In this French Open, but for her second round match against Naomi Osaka, Swiatek has not dropped a set. Paolini, on the other hand, has had three set matches in the 3rd and 4th round, as well as in the quarter-final. Paolini is the first Italian player in more than a decade to play a French Open final.

Swiatek, who won the French Open in 2020, 2022 and 2023, is eyeing a fourth title in Roland Garros, which will make her only the fourth player ever to win the Women’s Singles championship 4 times. She will join the likes of Chris Evert, Justin Henin, Steffi Graff. A win on Saturday will also make her only the second women’s singles camp to win the French Open three times in a row, after Justin Henin.
