F1 Singapore Grand Prix: Lando Norris gets 5th pole of season; Max Verstappen in front row

F1 Singapore Grand Prix: McLaren, which is leading the Constructors Championship, has drivers in row 1 and 3 and will look at cementing its lead further in Race 18 of the season.

In 2023, one of the three races that Max Verstappen did not win was the Singapore Grand Prix; Carlos Sainz Jr did, after starting the race from pole position. This time, Verstappen has a shot at a victory in Singapore; he’s in the front row along with McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was a tad faster than him in qualifying.

Lando Norris in pole; can he convert?

In the 4 races that Norris has started from pole, he’s clocked the fastest lap in three, but won only 1, at the Dutch Grand Prix. In fact, the first time Norris was on pole this season at the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen won, which was the last victory for the latter, who is the defending Drivers’ Champion and is the current points table leader, despite winning only 7 races so far.

Should Norris win or finish on podium, it will help McLaren extend its lead over last year’s champion, Red Bull Racing. Norris is currently in second place in the Drivers standing, 59 points behind Verstappen and will need to step it up in the last 8 races of the season if he fancies a shot at the title.

After Singapore, F1 gets yet another nearly month-long break and will resume with the United States Grand Prix between October 18 and 20. The season is set to end in the weekend of December 6-8 in Abu Dhabi.
