Max Verstappen's title defence is on shaky grounds

The 2024 Formula 1 racing is 16 races down, exactly two-third way in the season of 24 events. Last weekend, the teams were in Italy for the Italian Grand Prix, where Charles Leclerc blazed to victory, which put his team, Ferrari, only 39 points shy of Constructors’ Championship leader Red Bull Racing. With only 8 races to go, the top teams do not have insurmountable totals on board, and neither does defending Divers’ Champion Max Verstappen.

Up next, the teams head to Azerbaijan for the Qatar Airways Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which will take place between September 13 and September 15. The street circuit of 6.003 km, which drivers lap 51 times for a total of 306. 049 km is held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The practice sessions and qualifying, as well as the race, will be available to stream on FanCode for fans in India.

Drivers’ standing at the end of 16 Races (Top 10)

Max Verstappen still leads the pack with 303 points, followed by Lando Norris at 241 points. The top 10 drivers also include Charles Leclerc (217), Oscar Piastri (197), Carlos Sainz (184), Lewis Hamilton (164), Sergio Perez (143), George Russell (128), Fernando Alonso (50) and Lance Stroll (24). Unlike 2023, when Verstappen was an almost unstoppable force, winning 19 of the 22 races, this season, the defending champion has been having all sorts of troubles with his car, and has won only 7 of the 16 races so far. In fact, Verstappen has not had a victory since the Spanish Grand Prix.

Constructors’ Championship standing

Last year’s champions, Red Bull Racing is at the top of the list, albeit by a very slim margin of only 8 points. Red Bull, at 446 points, is likely to be pushed down the order within a race or two, what with McLaren in current second place and Ferrari, which is in third, at 438 and 407 points respectively. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have consistently been in the top 5 in each race, as also Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Red Bull’s lead has been on the strength of primary driver Verstappen, but he’s having a bad season and his teammate Perez hasn’t been contributing much to the points either.
