Formula 1 is currently on a mandatory summer break

After completion of 14 of the 24 races in the Formula 1 calendar of 2024, the premier racing event is currently on a mandatory summer break, with a two-week complete shutdown that will result in no on-track activity for nearly a month. The summer break began after the Belgian Grand Prix and will be in effect till the Dutch Grand Prix (August 23-25).

The Belgian Grand Prix, had an interesting result, with winner George Russell being disqualified after his car weighed in less than the mandated minimum weight requirement. His teammate Lewis Hamilton was then adjudged winner. Max Verstappen, who’d qualified with the fastest lap time for pole position, had been demoted to 11th place, after he was given a 10-place grid penalty for an engine change.

At the end of 14 races, the season is interestingly poised. Unlike 2023, when Verstappen absolutely ruled the race track and won 19 of 22 races, he’s triumphed in only 7 races so far. As the defending Drivers Champion, he’s in the lead in the points table, but it is not as commanding ead as it was a year ago.

Verstappen currently has 277 points to his credit. Lando Norris, with only 1 win and 7 other podium finishes, is at second place with 199 points, while Charles Leclerc, with 1 win and 5 other podium finishes is in third place with 177 points. He’s followed by Oscar Piastri (167), Lewis Hamilton (150), Sergio Perez (131) and George Russell (116), who still have a shot at giving Verstappen a run for his money, with 10 races and 250 (winner) points still up for grabs.

In the Constructors’ Championship, defending champs Red Bull Racing are holding on to the top position with 408 points, but with their second driver Sergio Perez clocking only 4 podium finishes so far and bringing in points in single digits, their advantage has been steadily dwindling. In fact, after the Belgium race, McLaren has moved up to second place, ahead of Ferrari. At 366 points, the team is only 42 points shy of Red Bull. At third place is Ferrari with 345 points and while Mercedes has registered three wins this season, at 266 points currently, they may not be much of a threat for the top 3, leading into the last 10 races of the season.

The 2024 season began in Bahrain on March 2 and is expected to end on December 8 in Abu Dhabi. Up next is the Dutch Grand Prix, followed by the Italian Grand Prix a week later. There’s nearly two weeks before Round 17, as well as before Round 19, but then there are a couple of triple headers to end the season. All the racing action, including free practice, qualifying and the races can be streamed on FanCode in India.
