Avinash Sable creates history: 1st Indian man to win 3000m steeplechase Gold, breaks Asian Games record

In Hangzhou, alongside the 3000m steeplechase, Sable will also participate in the 5000m race.

On Sunday, Avinash Sable achieved a historic feat, becoming the first Indian man to secure a gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. The 29-year-old athlete not only secured India's first-ever gold medal in athletics at the ongoing Games but also set a new record.

He completed the race in a remarkable time of 8 minutes and 19.50 seconds and this achievement saw him surpass the previous Asian Games record of 8 minutes and 22.79 seconds, which was held by Iran's Hossein Keyhani since the 2018 Jakarta Games.

Sable's victory adds another gold to India's medal tally at this edition of the Asian Games, marking the 12th gold for the nation and the first in track and field at Hangzhou.

Known for his prowess in the 3000m steeplechase, Sable, a silver medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, currently holds the national record with a time of 8 minutes and 11.20 seconds. His season's best performance stands at 8:11.63, placing him as the second-fastest Asian in the event, behind Japan's Miura Ryuji, who has a season's best of 8:09.91.

In Hangzhou, alongside the 3000m steeplechase, Sable will also participate in the 5000m race.
