Randeep Hooda and Ileana D'Cruz’s Tera Kya Hoga Lovely is a ‘yet another attempt’ to enforce the norm that beauty is just skin deep!
Tera Kya Hoga Lovely
Tera Kya Hoga Lovely Story:
When you switch on the TV at whatever time f the day or night, chances are ‘bright’ (no pun intended here!) that every second or third ad will be about selling fairness products in an otherwise ‘dark’ world. As if the common man’s obsession with fairness was not enough, there are many celebrities (barring a few), who lend their pretty and fair faces (for a big fat sum, of course) in order to promote these fairness creams. This week’s release Tera Kya Hoga Lovely also treads on the same path of the ‘importance’ of being fair and the possible repercussions if a person is not fair!
Tera Kya Hoga Lovely Review
The film starts off with Sombhir (Randeep Hooda) and his parents visiting Lovely (Ileana D'Cruz) house to see her for marriage. No sooner do they see Lovely, they realize that they have been cheated, because the girl shown in the photograph was having fair skin as compared to the girl whom they were seeing was with dark skin. After a few hiccups and a few verbal altercations, Sombhir and his parents upfront reject Lovely and walk away.
After a few days, Lovely’s father gets a marriage proposal for his daughter, but, on one condition that they should be able to shell out huge dowry in both cash and kind. A helpless but desperate father, then, agrees to the marriage proposal, which gives way to wedding preparations on a grand scale.
As a part of the dowry, Lovely’s father tries to fulfil every possible demand made by their would be in-laws. After paying the money, Lovely’s father tells the shopkeeper to deliver the products at their house while he will go ahead. The very moment he reaches home, he gets a shock of his life when he gets to know that someone had already whisked away their expensive items which he had purchased for dowry. As luck would have it, the investigating Officer in the case is none other than Inspector Sombhir!
After initial few awkward moments at Lovely’s house, Sombhir gets started with his investigations. Even though he boasts of a track record of cent per cent success in all the cases, Lovely’s case of missing items only gets more and more confusing with every passing second. Eventually, when Sombhir solves the case, he gets the shock of his life when he gets to know the real criminal.
What happens when Sombhir comes face to face with the criminal, why does he get shell shocked when he identifies the criminal, what happens to Lovely and her marriage and is Lovely able to find a suitable match despite being dark skinned is what forms the rest of the story.
First things first. Living upto the saying of ‘giving the devil its due’, one needs to applaud the duo of Randeep Hooda and Ileana D'Cruz (esp. the latter), for agreeing to be a part of such a film that could have deep impact about their ‘audience-perceived persona’. There are a very handful of actors today in Bollywood who dare to challenge the norms and step out of their comfort zone to do challenging roles. Best example of this stand in the form of Ayushmann Khurrana who touched upon the concept of baldness in ‘Bala’).
As for the film Tera Kya Hoga Lovely, it totally rests and rides on the shoulders of Ileana D'Cruz and Randeep Hooda. As for Ileana D'Cruz, she seems to be a perfect and tailor-made choice for the said role. There are times when her character in the film just about tends to go astray, but the finesse which she offers on screen, her character comes back on track!
Then, there is the suave and Randeep Hooda, who too, seems, tailor made for the role of a Haryanvi police inspector. The conviction with which he mouths his dialogues in the typical Haryanvi dialect is really praise worthy. He also convinces the audiences about the reason as to why is he the Mr. Go-to person for such roles.
Onto a close second is the television and social media’s darling Karan Kundrra, who does a fairly decent job of his character (a few hamming scenes not included!). Besides them, there are two of the most ever-dependable actors in the film in the form of Pavan Malhotra and Rajendra Gupta, who both bring their own charm to the film. Rest of the film’s characters carry the film forward.
As far as the film’s direction is concerned, Balwinder Singh Janjua, even though he needs to be applauded for making a film about a sensitive topic like societal obsession and the demand for fair skinned girls as brides. Besides that, there is nothing outstanding about the film. Despite the presence of few light moments in the film, there are no ‘seeti-maar’ moments.
Even though the film’s story (Anil Rodhan, Kunal Mandekar) is extremely relatable, the film tends to lag a bit (in places) because of the shaky screenplay (Anil Rodhan, Rupinder Chahal, Balwinder Singh Janjua). The film’s editing (Sanyukta Kaza) could definitely have been a bit more watertight in terms of chipping off a few scenes (esp. in the film’s second half), which could have helped the film in a big way. Film’s cinematography (Andre Menezes) is commendable. Film’s music is strictly passable and the songs do not have a retention value.
Tera Kya Hoga Lovely verdict:
Even though the film's plot walks on a path of a novel idea that needed to be addressed, but, with low key publicity, extremley low buzz and also handful number of theatres screening the film, Tera Kya Hoga Lovely will find it tough to sustain itself at the box-office.
