Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar
Director Dibakar Banerjee, who has helmed underrated gems like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Shanghai, has always been talented enough to tell a coherent story. But he falters at that very aspect with Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar.
At the outset, the film might seem like a story of two lovers, much like the lead pair Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor’s Ishaqzaade. But it’s far from that. Here, you have Sandeep aka Sandy (Parineeti Chopra), who seeks to right her wrongs, and is aided by a hesitant man named Pinky (Arjun Kapoor). The plot, at times, feels like it’s playing on loop till a point where Sandy helps Neena Gupta’s character to recover her money from a scam. This leads to Pinky doing everything in his power to protect Sandy.
A major grouse in the film’s script is how it contradicts itself. Sandy is shown as a woman who has control over her life. She stands up to her ex-boss, who is also her ex-lover. But when Pinky, whom she has only just met, misbehaves with her, she does not say a word. She, instead, calls him ‘sir’ in many scenes. This contrast in her personality is quite confusing. Pinky too, despite being selfish, finds himself helping Sandy and empathising with her as the film progresses.
Although the plot might appear cute and the film has its heart in the right place, it could have been executed better. The choppy editing doesn’t help the film either.
Parineeti tries to show a new side of herself, but unfortunately isn’t too convincing as Sandy. Arjun, on the other hand, shines as Pinky in a few scenes; his transformation towards the end of the film is one of its few highlights.
The movie could have been a fun ride, only if it had been executed well. Even though there are scenes in Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar that might grip you, these are few and far between.
