Rudramkota movie review: A routine village drama with a few passable emotions

Rudramkota

Story

The film is based in a small village named Rudramkota. Kotamma(Jayalalitha) is the head of the village who is all for love. If any couple in love seeks her help, Kotamma makes sure that she gets them married. At the same time, Kotamaa is very particular about illegal relations in the village, and if she finds anyone, they will get the death penalty and the one to execute it is Rudra(Anil Kandavalli). In such a scenario, a few youngsters land in the village and end up committing a heinous crime. What will Kotamma do now? How will Rudra take care of the mess and how is Kotamma's granddaughter involved in all? That forms the rest of the story.

Review

The film is based on how people in the small town commit heinous crimes in the name of lust. The story idea is good as director Ramu Kona has set up this film in a small town where such crimes are more ghastly. The mentalities of the small-town people and how they look at women who are broad-minded have been handled in a gripping manner.

Director Ramu Kona's story is routine but the way he has designed the characters is quite decent in the first half an hour of the film. The way the characters of Kotamma and Jayalalitha are introduced is quite interesting and keeps the audience curious as to how this unique theme of the film will unfold in the next two hours or so.

The introduction scenes of the hero, a fight sequence designed for him are executed in a neat way. But once all this is done, the film gets bogged down a bit. The next half an hour until the breakpoint is filled with mundane scenes that do not showcase anything novel. This bores the audience until the interval bang is brought in with a decent impact.

The film is high on emotions but if some impressive dialogues had been added, the output would have been something else. The length of the film is a tad high and a few repeated scenes in the first half should have been trimmed to make the viewing experience better. The film has music by Subhash Anand and Niranjan. The songs are decent and the background score was decent.

Veteran actress, Jayalalitha makes a comeback to the big screen after a long gap and she was impressive. She commands respect in her role and Anil Kandavalli, who played Rudra did a fine job in his role. Though he looked rusty at the beginning of the film, he did well with his emotional outbursts in the second part.

Alekhya who played Dhrithi is quite impressive in her role. Be it her look or screen presence, the young actress handled her small role impressively. Yet another major drawback of the film is the way the backstories of Kotamma and Rudra were handled. Why are they against people having illegal relationships and the logic behind that should have been showcased in an impressive way.

The camera work by Sanjeev is impressive as it captures the small town setup in a beautiful manner. The production design and lyrics were good but the editing was disappointing. Rudramkota has a simple story but the earth characters give it a new look. While watching the film, one gets a feeling that more seasoned actors would have done a better job of conveying emotions in a better way.

Verdict

On the whole, Rudramkota is a rustic village drama made by a young team. The backdrop, characters, and a few surprising elements have been handled well. But the lengthy runtime and lack of solid emotions are some of the drawbacks. If you like village dramas, give this film a shot but there is nothing new that is being showcased here.
