Maeri Review: Sai Deodhar impresses as a protective mother in a predictable but heartwarming story

Maeri Review

Maeri

Maeri Story: ZEE5's latest series, Maeri stars Sai Deodhar, Tanvi Mundle, Chinmay Mandlekar, Bhushan Patil, and Sagar Deshmukh in key roles. The story of Maeri follows Tara Deshpande, a protective mother of Manasvi (played by Tanvi Mundle). After her daughter is brutally gang-raped by powerful youths, she seeks help from the law and police. As the law fails to give her justice, Tara takes things into her own hands and sets out to bring justice to her daughter. Will Tara be able to do that?

Maeri Review:

Bollywood has been producing films and series portraying mothers' journeys, seeking justice for their children whenever they become victims of wrong deeds. ZEE5's Maeri is one such story and it almost reminds us of Sridevi's Mom and Raveena Tandon’s Maatr.

Set in Mumbai, the narrative of Maeri focuses on the middle-class Deshpande family: Hemant (Sagar Deshmukh), Tara, and their daughter Manasvi. While they lead a simple life, the family’s world turns upside down when Manasvi is brutally gang raped and dumped on the roadside by Rohit Jamwal (Yash Malhotra) and his friends. These men have an influential background.

The series, however, seems predictable as the next scenes follow Tara and her relentless effort of seeking justice for her daughter after the law fails. The title of the series rightfully fits with the story as the meaning of Maeri is mother and the plot captures the tale of maternal justice.

However, the series which has a predictable storyline falls short of the compelling narrative. Tara fights against the corrupt system, societal prejudices, and vengeance while maintaining parental love.

Speaking about the performances, Sai Deodhar as Tara shines as a protective mother without a doubt. She is not only a chemistry teacher but also a doting mother to her daughter Manasvi. She carries the whole series with her unique expressions and acting skills.

The 7-episodic series, however, feels boring at one point as you can predict the future of Manasvi, Tara, and their battle for justice.

Maeri Verdict:

Maeri, written and directed by Sachinn Darekkar, presents a mother's story of seeking justice for her daughter after she is brutally gang-raped. Even though the plot is quite predictable, the series captures your heart as it showcases a mother's sacrifices for her child. While the narrative falls short at one point in time, Maeri can be a nice choice, if you are yearning for a heartwarming story.

Meanwhile, Maeri is streaming on ZEE5. You can also watch it with your OTTplay Premium subscription.
