Review:

Just as the name suggests, food is definitely at the heart of K Food Show: A Nation of Broth. But more than just food, the show also attempts to give viewers a glimpse into the rich culture and heritage of South Korea through the delectable dishes that make their way onto the show. The show gives special focus to a staple part of Korean cuisine- broth.

The series follows ‘foodies’ Ryu Soo-Young, Ham Yon-Ji and Huh Young-Man as they embark upon a ‘broth journey’, trying out broth dishes from a variety of regions across the country ranging from seaside towns to sprawling cities. Through the course of their journey, not only are viewers treated to a plethora of mouth watering broth dishes, but the hosts also take us through a lesson in South Korean history centred around the food.

Viewers get an insider view of what goes into making some of the rich broths that form a part of the trademark dishes in each region the trio visit. The makers made sure to optimise the entire ‘foodie’ experience as best as they could, and the settings for the same seemed to have been perfectly chosen for that. Among the snow capped mountains, the trio sit down for a warm bowl of soup that warms their very souls. The trio were whisked away to seaside towns when it came to seafood broths. A variety of seafood in an array of colours form a delightful sight as the trio dig into the distinctive dishes- from a seafood tower to soups with whole octopi twisting around one’s chopsticks. As the show makes its way to a small traditional village, viewers are taken back in time as some conventional, fascinating processes give rise to another set of delectable dishes. The makers chose to hone in on the painstaking, complicated process involved and through that give viewers lessons in the rich history that passed down from generations, pieces of which were still kept intact through the food. Ham Yon-Ji perfectly captures this sentiment when she said “its like history is unfolding before my eyes”.

The deep connections that the locals share with the food also take centre stage in the show, as we get to see how several generations of a family dedicate themselves to keeping the traditions of their ancestors alive through food. The fruits of their efforts show up not only in their food, but also the popularity of their family businesses among the local residents.

But not only tradition, the show also features its fair share of ‘modern’ twists broth dishes become subjected to at the hands of up and coming restaurateurs. The makers take care to showcase flavours appealing to every generation during the course of the three part series.

The trio also add their own flavour to the show with their delightful interactions and witty quips. Their genuine love for the dishes they try out makes the show all the more appealing to viewers.

Verdict:

K Food Show: A Nation of Broth takes viewers across a delightful journey across South Korea through the country’s delectable signature broth dishes. Through the same, viewers also get to experience a part of the country’s rich culture and tradition that is sure to inspire the foodie in you, as well as the globetrotter.
