Justin Bieber: Our World is like getting front row seats to his first live concert in three years. There’s precious little otherwise.
Justin Bieber: Our World
Story: Justin Bieber has not had a live concert in three years, and finally emerges on the eve of New Years, in a world still battling with the coronavirus pandemic.
Review: Let’s be clear at the outset – I am not a Justin Bieber fan; I like his music, though, and continue to play it on car rides despite protestations from the younger generation of the family. His relationship dynamic with his ex, Selena (Gomez), current wife Hailey, his mental health or religious POV, don’t matter – the boy is talented. Period.
Justin Bieber: Our World allowed me to see the singer in a live concert; his first in three years. The songs were, no doubt, good, as he sang or lip-synched his way through them. The rest of it seemed like a carefully machinated PR mechanism, but to what end? What do audiences glean from it? Does it show them anything more than they already know about the singer? If you follow his or Hailey’s Instagram pages, you will probably know more about Justin than what this show offers. So, what exactly was the purpose? Beats me! Wait, perhaps it was about putting together a show during the pandemic, testing everyone involved on a daily basis, etc. Well, almost. I don’t recall seeing JB himself being tested, or for that matter wearing a mask; there's also no clarity if he's ever been vaccinated. Hell, despite their best efforts, the choreographer tested positive and was out of action for a while in the run-up to the show.
As for the concert bits, well, it was an outdoor setting in December, but watching Justin decked in winter warms in drab colours wasn’t exciting. Despite the laser works and the background dancers, it just seemed like a lazy effort at putting a show together.
Verdict: Beliebers will watch this no matter what; for the rest, well, sit back, relax, close your eyes and listen in – that may just be a better experience.
