Court - State vs. A Nobody Story

Chandu (Harsh Roshan) is a college dropout who does odd jobs for money. He falls in love with Jabili (Sridevi Appala) and this does not go with her regressive uncle who plans and files a POCSO act against Chandu and puts him behind bars. Left with no choice, Chandu's poor family approaches a top lawyer who rejects the case. This is the time his assistant, Teja (Priyadarshi) takes up the case and how he manages to free the young boy is the basic story of the film.

Court – State vs. A Nobody is written and directed by Ram Jagadeesh. This marks his debut film, and he takes on the challenge of crafting a courtroom drama, an ambitious genre that isn’t easy to execute. On top of that, he delves into the complexities of the POCSO Act, which enforces stringent punishments for crimes against minor girls. A subject like this requires in-depth research, and Ram Jagadeesh has certainly done his homework. His understanding of the legal intricacies is solid, and the film does not falter on technical aspects. The storytelling is so immersive that you barely get a chance to glance at your phone.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is Sivaji’s character—a wicked uncle whose regressive mindset serves as the foundation of the story. Court – State vs. A Nobody also benefits from an excellent cast. Ram has made the right casting choices, and everyone delivers strong performances.

The courtroom scenes are a major highlight, as they are presented logically and realistically. The director avoids unnecessary commercial elements, keeping the narrative focused. While the film’s opening love story feels slightly dragged, once that portion is out of the way, the pacing picks up and remains gripping. The film also effectively portrays the emotional toll on families when someone is wrongly accused.

A commendable aspect of Court–State vs. A Nobody is its balanced approach. The director does not take sides, instead shedding light on the regressive uncle’s perspective—he is strict with girls not out of sheer cruelty, but because he believes society is unsafe for them. However, the courtroom confrontations between the two lawyers could have been more intense to heighten the cinematic drama. The film also takes some convenient storytelling shortcuts, particularly in the climax.

While the ending is well executed, some of Priyadarshi’s statements about age and love are not conveyed effectively. The moment where the girl reunites with the young boy after the verdict and declares, “I am 18 now and ready for everything,” comes off as contradictory. If this aspect had been handled more carefully, the overall impact of the film would have been even stronger.

One of the key reasons Court – State vs. A Nobody works is the powerhouse performances. Senior actor Sivaji is a revelation—having once played a lovable schoolteacher in the #90s series, his transformation into a regressive antagonist is striking. He breathes life into his character, making it one of the film’s standout elements.

Harsh Roshan, the young lead, continues to improve with each film and delivers a solid performance. Debutante Sridevi is a great find—she bears a striking resemblance to actress Lavanya Tripathi and delivers an impressive performance. Priyadarshi is excellent as the rookie lawyer, effortlessly fitting into his role. Harshvardhan is effective as the defense lawyer, while Rohini also plays her part well.

Vijay Bulganin’s songs are impressive, and his background score enhances the film’s mood. Nani, as the producer, has once again chosen the right story at the right time. Court – State vs. A Nobody is a film that today’s society needs, as it delivers an important message to young people about navigating life’s challenges responsibly. With this film, Nani proves yet again that his story choices resonate with audiences and guarantee box office success. Ultimately, Court–State vs. A Nobody stands out as one of the finest courtroom dramas in Telugu cinema.

On the whole, Court–State vs. A Nobody is a gripping courtroom drama with outstanding performances, a strong message, and powerful emotions.
