Chamak review — Paramvir Cheema's courageous act shines through in this edge-of-the-seat thriller

Directed by Rohit Jugraj, Chamak revolves around the complexities of Kaala's life. An aspiring singer travels to Punjab from Canada to unravel the mystery behind his parents Taara Singh and Navpreet's death. What follows in between his quest to know the truth forms the crux of this thriller.

Chamak review:

The basic premise of Chamak is thrilling. It is a twisted yet gripping tale of Kaala's (Paramvir Cheema) life. Just out of his jail term, he commits a heinous crime in Canada. Before cops manage to nab him, Kaala has reached Punjab. While he secures a job in his homeland, life has a different plan for him. A series of events lead him to know the fact that Taara Singh and Navpreet, who were killed in 1998, were his parents. Thus begins his quest to know the truth behind his parents' murders.

Paramvir Cheema's courageous act as Kaala is applaudworthy. He keeps the thrilling aspect intact throughout the six episodes. An interesting aspect of his role is his character arc. His journey from being called 'fuddu' to putting up a brave front whilst going through various hurdles is commendable. Amid fighting different battles to know the truth, Kaala meets Jazz (Isha Talwar). What seems like a love story brewing between the two turns out to be a tale with an abrupt end. This is one of the major loopholes of Chamak. The makers take enough time to build a narrative around Kaala-Jazz's bond but leave us on a cliffhanger.

That aside, Paramvir aka Kaala's roller-coaster journey to know 'who killed his father' is intriguing. There are revelations and more revelations with every step this character takes. Be it getting through his late mother's family members, or struggling to reach his father's business partner friends through various means, Kaala tries all permutations and combinations to find out the truth.

What makes Chamak even more intriguing is the individual stories of its key characters played by Manoj Pahwa, Mohit Malik, Suvinder Vicky, and Akasa Singh. Their characters are well etched out, and layered and that adds to the thrilling factor of this musical saga.

Coming to the music (main) aspect of Chamak, it's the biggest factor that holds the entire story together and keeps the essence intact. The album of this series taps into folk music as well as modern-day music. It is a good move for a story that travels back and forth in time.

Chamak verdict:

Chamak is an edge-of-the-seat thriller with music being the soul of it. It is a story that will stay with you for a while after you finish watching it.
