Byomkesh season 7: Chorabali review: Bengal's favourite detective series goes beyond just solving mysteries

Byomkesh season 7: Chorabali - Anirban Bhattacharya.

Byomkesh

Story:

Based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s book of the same name, Byomkesh season 7: Chorabali explores the story of how chorabali aka quick sand becomes one of the major hooks of the story. Byomkesh and his partner Ajit go on their next hunt, of solving a crime. However, things are pretty mysterious and complicated this time around. Can they handle it?

Review:

Byomkesh as a series is usually slow and season 7: Chorabali has not exactly improved in that aspect. However, since it is the requirement of the show, it can be forgiven. Even otherwise, Chorabali climbs the ladder in becoming a must watch series.

As always, the series starts off mysteriously, with one figure being suspecting of others. As you dig deeper into the story, Chorabali and everything related becomes clearer. This has always been the format of Byomkesh series and its legacy continues with season 7 too.

Chorabali, literally meaning quicksand, has a main connection to the story. The series stays close to the novel's story. The story has been recreated even previously and every single time, it won accolades for obvious reasons. This story works even in today's times. Thus, Byomkesh season 7 works well.

Anirban Bhattacharya (Byomkesh)'s entry too is quite heroic. He shows his face right when someone needs his help - not before, not after. It is what makes the series interesting. As an actor, he gets to express a lot through the series and Anirban manages to do justice to it every single time.

Byomkesh, as a character, is quite adorable. He is liked by a kid too this time. His romance with Sabyati continues and works wonders even after six seasons. Doing justice in his own way, Byomkesh is quite the hero who deserves to be lauded, even though he has quite the commercial elements to him.

Once again, Byomkesh bullies Ajit. The latter tries to stand up to the mastermind detective but still, falls back at some places. While that is true, it is also a fact that in reality, Byomkesh stands up for his partner.

Byomkesh could spot some things no one could, within minutes of him being on the crime scene. It is what makes him one of the best detectives. However, the one fault in the series is that the scenes feel like they are testing his skills, making it very convenient.

While the story is a little slower in pace, it isn't one bit disappointing. Staying true to its theme, there are hilarious moments in the episodes apart from the drama and thrill too. Once again, the first episode ends on a cliffhanger. The second one also begins on an interesting note.

There are so many moments where you get involved in solving the mystery along with Byomkesh, which is also the magic of the show. Some of the scenes are shot in the dark, late at night. These scenes become difficult to interpret, even when they are really important.

The mystery is something that is too obvious and still something nobody could be sure of. The detail through which the story unfolds is beautiful. Byomkesh lets you live every moment in the scene where the moment is taking place. That is why it is one of the most-loved series. Once again, it proves that it deserves the spot.

Very beautifully, the series also raises the question of gender inequality. It is likely to start a discussion, something that a series should do. Bonus points to the show for managing to do that.

Verdict:

Byomkesh, as always, is a must watch. Season 7: Chorabali, especially, has elements that every person out there, not just the Bengali consuming audiences, should see. Apart from a great way of unravelling the mystery, this Soumik Halder directorial also adds in some issues that need to be addressed, making the series ten times more interesting.
