Byadh Season 1
Story: The Department of Unusual cases find an unusual case in The Sparrow Killer. They try to find the deadly killer, who has a background as to why he is killing the innocent sparrows. The story has another message for the viewers too.
Review: Byadh (The Killer), based on the book Chorai Hotya Rohoshyo by Rajarshi Das Bhowmik, could have been an interesting concept. Director Abhirup Ghosh tries to bring across a story about animal cruelty but this Hoichoi original series almost never leaves an impact.
As always, the cinematography takes the cake here. The way all scenes are executed will manage to hold your interest.
Anirban Chakrabarti, for the cool Bengali man he is, has a similar aura. He is scary, sure, but the actor also deals with situations calmly, something you don't expect with the way he is introduced.
On the other hand, Rajatava Dutta's entry is hilarious. He heads the 'Department of Unusual cases' and thus, nothing is usual about him. He makes the series an interesting watch.
The action scenes are too slow, to the extent that they make you yawn. Furthermore, the camera angle for these shots makes you lose the remaining interest in the scene.
There is a scene in the series which shows animal cruelty. While the scene already appears forced, the lead actor involved in the scene cannot even bring forth the emotion associated. His anger simply appears mechanical which does not help you grasp the emotion as you should.
Anirban and Rajatava's much-awaited confrontation scene is also lukewarm at its best. You expect so much considering their characters but get nothing in return.
In fact, when Shouvik (Souman Bose) finds Kanai (Rajatava) in the fields, he is expected to rush to him. Instead, he simply calls out his name (in vain, obviously).
Anirban (Bishu) shows his passion for the project in his own way. He says something that we have been hearing in the series since the beginning. The dialogue fits well but doesn't quite leave you stunned or angry like it originally intended to. Thus, Byadh, simply touches the brim and lets go of it completely.
Verdict: Byadh falls short in its execution of the story. Given the concept, the Anirban Chakrabarti show could become something marvellous but it simply touches the brim and then forgets all about what it wanted to tell. You can easily skip this series and not miss a thing.
Byadh is streaming on Hoichoi. Watch the trailer here:
