Review:
Boli is a web series that explores the politics of a place. While it manages to bring the story across in a rather beautiful manner i.e. by giving women equal power, the show does falter in some places too, for it becomes expected. The story, even though slow, keeps you intrigued after the first few episodes.
The first scene itself is very impactful to the series. Sohana Saba is an embodiment of power. However, many times women are left helpless in front of men. The scene explores that we'll.
Sohana leaves a good impression throughout the series. She only grows better with each scene. Not only is the character well-written but Sohana adds something to it each time.
The series itself has a very raw and real feel to it. It has a Gangs of Wasseypur vibe to it. Some time into the series, it becomes a replica of Haider.
We see an interpretation of two worlds - one where a man treats a woman like a piece of garbage and the other where another man is treated by women. The minute these two worlds come together, is a moment to cherish.
It is beautiful how the women take precedence in the series in a time when they are treated like objects to be used. However, too many stories run parallely which make it tough to follow where the show is going. This is not necessarily a bad thing.
The action sequences in the series tend to be a little OTT but are still real. Boli, however, moves at a slow pace. Life comes full circle for Sohel Mondal's Rustom who was rescued from the beach and faces trouble the next time he is there. The actor shows every emotion with near perfection.
The politics in this story and gang wars are what make Boli a worth watch. Thankfully, they basically form the crux of the show. The twist in the story is really unexpected. Unfortunately, the execution isn't, at least for the first bit of the surprise. The second part of the surprise hits you hard. With that, the series comes to an end and you wonder, what next?
Verdict:
Boli is very raw and real. If you are okay watching gruesome scenes and love watching stories which explore politics, then Boli is a recommended watch.
