30 Weds 21 Season 2

The second season of Chai Bisket's 30 Weds 21 had begun with an episode where a 30-year-old Prudhvi (Chaitanya Rao) and a 21-year-old Meghana (Ananya Sharma) ring in their first anniversary, while stuck at a store, introspecting their relationship in a discussion with their pals Karthik, Jessie. The second episode of the season goes a step further in exploring their equation, while Meghana is about to join as a writing intern in the same company as Jessie's. How does the husband deal with the new chapter in Meghana's life? What's Meghana's first day at work like?

For a relatively conservative character like Prudhvi, it takes a while to accept that his wife would be heading for work while he would be working from home. Yet, he takes it in his stride and goes the extra mile to make her feel comfortable. He not only drops her at work but also buys her a special long-distance lamp where one could stay connected with each other's thoughts even while staying away from one another. As rightly pointed out by Meghana herself, the gesture appears a little too cheesy but the director Prithvi Vanam doesn't indulge with it too much.

In the sequences where Meghana enters her new office, meets her terrifying boss and the team is struggling for new ideas, reach on their YouTube channel, one wonders if Chai Bisket took a leaf out of their own book and weaved it into the episode. The comparisons apart, Prithvi Vanam and his team get the workplace vibe absolutely right, while delving into the struggles of content development on a day-to-day basis. The conversation between Meghana and her colleague about their sketches sounding like an angry rant was particularly well written.

The conflict between Prudhvi and Meghana over the former's incessant calling at her workplace appears slightly exaggerated, more so with a violin-dominated background score that amplifies the drama in the situation beyond necessity. 30 Weds 21 has worked well precisely because of the right balance between drama and humour. The sequences about the youngsters in the company trying to flirt with Meghana, not realising she is married, sustains the light-hearted ambience in the episode.

The makers could've easily avoided the Pani Puri scene, resembling the ice-breaker scene in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and tried to create something more original and less cinematic. Beyond this mild disappointment, the show regains its momentum with the final stretch, where the husband guides his young wife about breaking free from her father's cocoon and navigating adulthood blues with maturity. The ending about Meghana finding acceptance at her workplace is predictable though it doesn't hamper the episode's momentum too much.

Chaitanya Rao, Ananya Sharma, Mahendar and Divya Reddy look assured, in sync with their character's psychology though Shree Kavitha Parupalli's nasty-boss-act could've come with more poise. The second episode of 30 Weds 21 Season 2 strikes a chord despite minor niggles.
