The Malayalam thespian celebrates his 65th birthday on 26 June 2023
Suresh Gopi, who won the hearts of Malayalam film fans through his various police officer roles, made his debut in 1965 as a child artist in the movie Odayil Ninnu. After turning heads for his small role in the movie, T. P. Balagopalan M. A he received much critical and commercial acclaim for his antagonist role in the action movie Irupatham Noottandu, which starred Mohanlal in the lead role.
Gopi appeared in multiple antagonists and supporting roles throughout the late 80s and early 90s with his prominent movies being Oru CBI Diary Kurippu Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha and Innale.
Gopi got his breakthrough in 1992 when he was cast as the lead role in the crime action film Thalastaanam which was written by Renji Panicker. The following year he starred in the crime thriller movie Ekalavyan, which was also written by Renji Panicker. The movie established Suresh Gopi as a leading man in the Malayalam movie industry. Both movies were directed by Shaji Kailas.
The 1994 movie Commissioner written by Panicker and directed by Kailas, featured Suresh Gopi in the leading role and was a blockbuster hit. The movie helped Gopi achieve superstardom among Malayali audiences.
He received the Kerala State Film Award as well as the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1998 movie Kaliyattam.
Highway Lelam and Pathram are other prominent movies that featured Suresh Gopi in the lead role. In 2015, he starred as the antagonist in the Tamil movie I, which starred Vikram in the lead role. He made a comeback to Malayalam cinema in 2020 with the movie Varane Avashyamund. He later appeared in the movies Kaaval and Paappan.
