Konkona Sen Sharma is notable for appearing in several independent movies and is considered to be one of the most influential actresses from contemporary parallel cinema. She made her acting debut as a child actress in the movie Indira in 1983, while her debut in a lead role was in the 2000 Bengali thriller movie Ek Je Aachhe Kanya.
In 2002 she won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the English language drama movie Mr and Mrs Iyer alongside Rahul Bose. Her performance in the Vishal Bharadwaj directorial, Omkara, was critically acclaimed and led to her winning the National Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as a Filmfare Award. The Anurag Basu directorial, Life in a… Metro and the Bengali movie Goynar Baksho are the other critically well-received movies in which Sharma has appeared. She also starred in the black comedy film Lipstick Under My Burkha in 2016, which won many international accolades.
She made her directorial debut in 2017 with the drama film A Death in the Gunj which won Sharma the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. In 2023 she directed one of the short films in the anthology movie Lust Stories 2.
