Mockumentaries, as a genre, takes a dig at real-life events only in a funny light, by capturing them in ‘realistic’, false documentary techniques. The art form began in a major way back in 1938 when Orson Welles imitated the reading of radio news in The War of the Worlds.

The concept gained momentum in the 1960s with films like Take the Money and Run (1969), A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and This is Spinal Tap (1984). With the Borat franchise, headlined by Sacha Baron Cohen raking in big box office numbers and garnering critical acclaim as well, the genre has come into mainstream Hollywood.
