Shobhana celebrates her 54th birthday on 21st March 2024.
Shobhana, the celebrated Malayalam actress, is renowned for her exceptional talent, grace, and versatility in Indian cinema. Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai hails from a family deeply rooted in the arts, with her mother, Kalamandalam Subalakshmi, being a noted dancer. Shobhana made her debut in Malayalam cinema with the film April 18 in 1984, marking the beginning of a stellar career that would span over three decades.
She has received multiple honours, including the 2011 Kalaimamani Award from Tamil Nadu State, two National Film Awards, one Kerala State Film Award, two Filmfare Awards South with fourteen nominations for Best Actress in three different south Indian languages, and many more. Throughout her nearly 40-year career, Shobana has acted in 230 films in various languages, most notably Malayalam, but also Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English. For her roles in the English film Mitr, My Friend and the Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu she was twice awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Beyond her film career, Shobhana is also a highly accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, trained under the legendary dancers Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subrahmanyam. In her twenties, she became a successful solo performer and choreographer. She currently owns and operates Kalarpana, a dance school in Chennai. She received the Padma Shri from the Indian government in recognition of her services to the arts. The Kerala State Government bestowed upon her the Kala Ratna Award.
