After making his acting debut with a minor role in the 1967 Bollywood movie Aman Naseeruddin Shah went on to be one of the most notable figures from Indian parallel cinema. He starred in the National Award winning Nishant in 1975 alongside prominent actors such as Girish Karnad, Amrish Puri, and Shabna Azmi.
Junoon Aakrosh and Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai are the other prominent movies. In 1983, he appeared in the black comedy movie Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest satirical movies from Indian cinema.
Hum Paanch Masoom and Ijaazat are some of the notable movies Shah appeared in after becoming active in mainstream cinema. He also appeared in TV Chandran's Malayalam movie Ponthan Mada alongside Mammootty and later, in 2000, portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in the Kamal Hassan's period crime drama film, Hey Ram. He also appeared in the movies Iqbal and Sarfarosh.
Shah also directed the 2006 movie Yun Hota To Kya Hota starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Paresh Rawal, and Irrfan Khan in the lead roles.
