Kooman
Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph helmed yet another taut thriller this year, titled Kooman. Set in the hills of the Kerala/Tamil Nadu border, the plot revolves around how a new police officer with the local police station disrupts the lives of the residents in the area. The film stars Asif Ali in the lead as CPO Giri Shankar.
Nna Thaan Case Kodu
Veteran Malayalam actor Kunchacko Boban continues to reinvent himself as an actor and his latest film Nna Thaan Case Kodu is a testament to this fact. He essays the role of a reformed thief who is inexplicably entangled in a court case involving several politicians. But unlike those who would give in to their circumstance, he refuses to be intimidated and decides to outwit his adversaries while leaning on the law.
Appan
Directed by Maju, Appan is a drama about a narcissistic and sadistic old man who is cruel to those around him despite being bedridden. The villagers who also have a score to settle with the old man hatch a plan to murder him. The film stars Alencier Ley Lopez as the cruel father and Sunny Wayne as his son.
Ariyippu
Acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan’s latest film is the drama titled Ariyuppu. The film follows the lives of a Malayali couple in Noida who dreams of migrating abroad for a better life. However, their lives are turned upside down when an old video clip is circulated among their colleagues which threatens to damage their careers and marriage.
Freedom Fight
The anthology film Freedom Fight is easily the most underrated film on this list. The film narrates five stories about individuals who are confined in metaphorical prisons and the struggles they endure to break free. Joju George, Rohini, and Rajisha Vijayan are some of the top-billed cast in this film.
Pada
Based on real events, Pada is set in the year 1996 when the district collector of Palakkad is held hostage by a group of five men who claim to be tribal activists. The film features a star-studded ensemble of Kunchacko Boban, Joju George, Vinayakan, Dileesh Pothan, Prakash Raj, Unnimaya Prasad, Indrans, Jagadish, and Salim Kumar.
Dear Friend
The fun-filled lives of four friends living in Bangalore are turned upside-down when one of them disappears overnight. As the rest of the group comes to terms with his disappearance, they discover that he may have been a grifter under a false identity. Directed by Vineeth Kumar, the film stars Tovino Thomas, Basil Joseph, and Darshana Rajendran in prominent roles.
Pathonpatham Noottandu
Malayalam filmmaker Vinayan has no t always enjoyed critical or commercial success over the years, following several forgettable films. However, he appears to have found the right formula with the period drama Pathonpatham Noottandu. Based on true events, the film is a fictionalized retelling of the lives of social reformers Arratupuzha Velayudha Chekavar and Nangeli. Siju Wilson and Kayadu Lohar essay the lead roles in this film.
