Everyone loves a good spy thriller. A tale of deception featuring an undercover agent willing to risk their life and limb and going the extra mile for the country. His mission, however, gets jeopardised when he falls in love with a blind girl named Nasreen. So, if spy thrillers like Mission Majnu floats your boat, here are some espionage thriller movies and shows to keep you on the edge of your seat:
Mukhbir – The Story of a Spy (Zee5)
Based on Maloy Krishna Dhar's novel, Mission to Pakistan: An Intelligence Agent in Pakistan Mukhbir is an espionage drama series set against the backdrop of the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. The valiant tale follows a highly-trained Indian spy who is embedded in Pakistan with a mission to investigate and report on the country’s top-secret military operations. Directed by Shivam Nair and Jayprad Desai, the show has an ensemble cast of Prakash Raj, Zain Khan Durrani, Adil Hussain, Harsh Chhaya, Satyadeep Misra, Barkha Bisht, Zoya Afroz and Karan Oberoi. The show’s nail-biting suspense and unpredictable turns will compel you to binge-watch this eight-episode series at a go.
Raazi (Amazon Prime Video)
Alia Bhatt lends a stellar performance in this thriller about a 20-year-old Kashmiri woman named Sehmat who gets married to a Pakistani military officer. It only makes matters more complex as Sehmat also happens to be a recently-recruited undercover spy with the Indian intelligence who has been trained to extract and report on military developments in Pakistan. Adapted from Harinder Sikka's 2008 novel Calling Sehmat, the film also stars Vicky Kaushal, Jaideep Ahlawat, Rajit Kapur, Shishir Sharma and Soni Razdan in prominent roles. Surely one of the most taut Indian spy thrillers ever made, Raazi is a must-watch for fans of the genre.
Baby (Disney+ Hotstar)
To combat the constant threats from terrorist organisations, an officer forms a covert counterintelligence unit. The film delves into the outfit’s latest mission which is to apprehend the maniacal mastermind whose terrorist organisation has its tentacles spread across the world. Akshay Kumar plays the lead here with Rana Daggubati, Danny Denzongpa, Taapsee Pannu and Kay Kay Menon in supporting roles.
Family Man (Amazon Prime Video)
The spy thriller series stars Manoj Bajpayee as Srikant Tiwari, a middle-class man living a double life. His family is unaware of his employment with the Threat Analysis and Surveillance Cell (TASC), a covert government intelligence outfit modelled on India’s RAW. The show follows Srikant, as he struggles to straddle his domestic life and his top-secret missions. This thriller series is also laced with dry humour as the show’s lead often finds himself in trying situations that lend to dark comedy.
Special Ops 1.5 (Disney+ Hotstar)
This Hotstar Specials series revolves around a Research and Analysis Wing team of five agents investigating several terror attacks in India. The team leader Himmat Singh (played to near perfection by Kay Kay Menon) is convinced there’s only one mastermind who could be pinned for the attacks and will do anything to confirm his theory. Created by Neeraj Pandey, the action espionage thriller also stars Vinay Pathak, Karan Tacker and Vipul Gupta.
Naam Shabana (Netflix)
The 2017 action thriller is a prequel to Akshay Kumar’s 2015 film Baby. Taapsee Pannu’s character Shabana Khan plays the lead in this one. The film follows her chronicles of becoming a spy after her lover gets killed and she seeks the help of a spy agency to avenge his death. The film also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Anupam Kher with cameos from Akshay Kumar and Madhurima Tuli.
