The 2015 Bengali film narrates the fictionalised story of Kadambari Devi, who is better known as Jyotirindranath Tagore’s wife or Rabindranath Tagore’s sister-in-law. The unfortunate tale of her premature demise has been the subject of great intrigue for many years. And people have always been curious about the woman who was the inspiration behind several of Tagore’s works.
The film explores this period of Rabindranath Tagore’s life and his enigmatic relationship with Kadambari. They developed a beautiful bond after Kadambari came to Thakurbari as the new bride at the mere age of nine. Being only a year older than Tagore, she became his playmate and a friend he grew up with. She becomes the person who encourages him to open his heart and cherish his unrecognised talent. Her intelligence and love for literature made her the perfect companion for young Tagore. From the poetic inner monologues to the depiction of the laid-back lifestyle enjoyed by the privileged at the time, the film creates a beautiful picture of life inside the well-known Thakurbari.
National Award-winning actress Konkona Sen Sharma essays a nuanced performance as Kadambari, whereas Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s performance as the young Rabindranath Tagore is equally convincing, and their unmatched chemistry is what makes this film truly special. The captivating background score by Bickram Ghosh complements the brilliance of Tagore’s timeless creations used in the film.
