Hollywood star Viola Davis is an acting powerhouse who has won the Triple Crown of Acting; which includes an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy, and a couple of Tony Awards for theatre as well. The talented 57-year-old has also been nominated for a Grammy this year. Her latest film, The Woman King, is a period drama set in 1820 West Africa and revolves around an all-female warrior unit called the Agojie. The film has been universally lauded and has also bagged 2 BAFTA nominations. So in today’s List hai toh hit hai, we take a look at films that pack the same action and revolt and feature feisty female characters like in The Woman King.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Disney+ Hotstar)

The first film on this list is unsurprisingly Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Marvel superhero film is a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther, with the lead roles essayed by an all-female ensemble. The film’s setting of the fictional African nation of Wakanda and strong female characters comprising a Queen monarch, a female superhero protagonist, a female warrior unit, and a female spy. The Ryan Coogler directorial features stellar performances by Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, and Lupita Nyong’o, with Bassett earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Gunpowder Milkshake (BookMyShow Stream)

The action thriller Gunpowder Milkshake may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but its high-octane action and neon-infused visuals have turned the film into a cult classic. Helmed by Israeli filmmaker Navot Papushado, the film features a star-studded all-female ensemble of Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan, Game of Thrones alum Lean Heady, Freya Allen from The Witcher, along with Hollywood legends Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, and Michelle Yeoh. The film follows an assassin who reunites with her former associates and her mother to protect her eight-year-old daughter.

Mad Max: Fury Road (Netflix, Amazon Prime)

Mad Max: Fury Road helmed by George Miller is a soft reboot of his iconic franchise which once starred Mel Gibson as the titular hero in a post-apocalyptic Australia. British actor Tom Hardy replaced Gibson in the 2015 film, but it's narrative pivots around Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa. Theron’s character is probably one of the most well-written female protagonists of all time, who is on a mission to save a group of women from a tyrant. The film features a supporting cast of Zoë Kravitz, Riley Keough, Hugh Keays-Byrne, and Nicholas Hoult. There is a prequel of this film in development based on the early days of Furiosa. We can't wait for this one to drop.

Annihilation (Netflix)

Academy-award winner Natalie Portman essays the lead role in the sci-fi horror film Annihilation. Directed by Alex Garland, the film is based on the eponymous novel by Jeff VanderMeer and follows a group of female scientists who are sent on a mission to uncover the mysterious phenomenon occurring inside a secluded area called Area X, filled with dangerous flora and fauna. Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Tuva Novotny also essay prominent roles in this film.

On the Basis of Sex (SonyLIV)

British actress Felicity Jones, best known for starring in critically-acclaimed films such as The Theory of Everything and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the lead in the biographical film On the Basis of Sex. Jones plays the role of the late US Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the film follows her formative years, when she struggled to find employment as a lawyer in a deeply misogynistic society despite graduating from an Ivy League law school. Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates, and Jack Reynor essay other prominent roles in this Mimi Leder directorial.

The Hate U Give (Disney + Hotstar)

Filmmaker George Tillman Jr, best known for directing the biopic on rapper The Notorious B.I.G. titled Notorious, has helmed the film The Hate U Give. The film is a heartfelt tale of a young girl’s fight for justice after witnessing a fatal police shooting. Despite her age and the intense scrutiny she is forced to endure, she decides to push back against the injustice. Amandla Stenberg plays the lead, and is assisted by a strong supporting cast of Regina Hall, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, and Common.
