His attempts to cure himself result in him developing a sort of transgenic vampirism. Leto was captivated by the character's fight with his condition as well as the moral implications of a bloodthirsty hero. He found the part surprisingly difficult since it was less character-driven than his previous performances and more true to his real-life nature, necessitating the use of his well-known method acting style.
