Rakesh Roshan's early life
Rakesh Roshan was born on 6 September 1949 to popular Indian music director Roshan Lal Nagrath and Indian Bengali singer Ira Roshan. His family belongs to the Punjabi Kayastha family. Roshan started his career as a composer with the 1949 film Neki aur Badi and later worked on films like Anhonee, Devar and Barsaat Ki Raat.

Rakesh and his early career
Rakesh got a kick-start to his career as an assistant director to filmmaker Mohan Kumar in films like Anjaana starring Rajendra Kumar and Babita. This happened soon after his father's demise.

Rakesh Roshan as an actor
Rakesh made his acting debut in a supporting role in T Prakash Rao-directed 1970 film Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani. He went on to act in more movies but only in supporting roles in films like Paraya Dhan, Aankh Micholi and Khubsoorat.

Rakesh Roshan's big breakthrough

Rakesh Roshan and his production company
Rakesh set up his own production company in 1980 named Filmkraft. The first film produced under the banner was the 1980 film Aap Ke Deewane, which turned out to be a box office flop. He later produced Kaamchor alongside Jayaprada and Shubh Kaamna in 1983.

Rakesh made his directorial debut with the 1987 film Khudgarz (starring Jeetendra, Shatrugan Sinha, Govinda, Amrita Singh, Bhanu Priya and Neelam Kothri) and later directed box office hits such as Khoon Bhari Maang, Karan Arjun and Koyla. The actor-turned-director only made rare appearances in films during the time and focused on his directorial ventures. He also bankrolled and directed his son Hrithik Roshan's 2003 film Koi... Mil Gaya. The film won the National Award for Best Film on Social Issues in 2004.

Rakesh married Pinky, daughter of producer and director Jay Om Prakash in 1971. The couple have two children together, namely Sunaina Roshan and Hrithik Roshan, a popular Bollywood actor. In 2019, he was diagnosed with early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat.
