Young docu-maker focuses on the history of Asia's largest red light district, Sonagachi
Asia's largest red light district Sonagachi- in Kolkata has always been a point of interest for filmmakers. Now, 22-year-old entrepreneur Ehasaas Kanjilal has delved into the heart of the area in her documentary, Red Knots. The film, produced under the banner of the Savera Foundation, offers a comprehensive exploration of the district’s history and its realities.
Ehsaas and her team, including Pratik Bhattacharjya, Anjanabha Roy, Swapnil Chakraborty, Indranil Barman, and many more young talents, bring out a thought-provoking exploration of Sonagachi's past, present, and the complex web of socio-economic dynamics that define its existence.
Red Knots offers a comprehensive examination of Sonagachi's history, tracing its evolution from a colonial-era brothel district to its present-day status as a vibrant yet marginalised community. Through intimate interviews, archival footage, and immersive storytelling, the documentary exposes the complexities of life within Sonagachi, highlighting the resilience and humanity of its inhabitants.
Commenting on the motivations behind the documentary, Ehasaas Kanjilal emphasises the importance of amplifying the voices of marginalised communities. “Our goal with this documentary is not only to inform but also to foster empathy and understanding,” she states. “By illuminating the realities of Sonagachi, we hope to spark meaningful conversations and drive positive change,” she adds.
The line production of Red Knots has been handled by Mojotale Entertainments. With attention to detail and a deep respect for the subject matter, the documentary promises to captivate audiences and challenge preconceived notions surrounding the area in Kolkata.
