Nine of the top 10 names have been south stars for the last several months, only Akshay Kumar the lone bonafide Bollywood entry
Every month, Ormax Media publishes an all-India list of most popular stars, based on certain metrics. At a time when south films have been finding favour among moviegoers across the country, it comes as no surprise that in the last several months, the top 10 of this list has been filled with names of south heavy-weights.
For the last 4 months, Tamil superstar Vijay has topped the list, with Baahubali and Salaar actor Prabhas also holding on to his number 2 position. The rest of the list has seen ups and downs in the same time period. While KGF star Yash, the lone name from Kannada cinema on the list, moved from number 7 in April to Number 3 in May and June, he’s slipped to fifth position for the month of July.
Also on the list are names like NTR Jr, Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, Mahesh Babu, Suriya and Ajith Kumar, with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar the only bonafide Hindi star in the top 10 of the list. Interestingly, Tovino Thomas, despite his growing popularity following Minnal Murali, or Fahad Faasil, for that matter, are yet to break into the top of this list. In fact, there is no actor from Malayalam in the top 10.
Meanwhile, the media consulting firms list of top Kannada stars for the same time period continues to be led by Rocking Star Yash, whose popularity remains unwavering months after KGF: Chapter 2 and with no news of his next acting project. He is joined by Vikrant Rona actor Kiccha Sudeep, 777 Charlie’s Rakshit Shetty, Challenging Star Darshan, and Century Star Shiva Rajkumar in the top 5.
Responding to the survey, several fans argued that Yash should be leading this list, given that his film has been the only one to literally set the box office on fire this year. He is also the only actor whose stature as a star has grown multi-fold in the last few years, which puts him in a different league altogether. In fact, fans argue that Vijay, whose Beast released along with KGF: Chapter 2 and floundered at the box office, does not deserve to be at the top of the list.
