A still from the trailer
It’s no longer a man’s world in the TV series from FX and Hulu, Y: The Last Man, which is a live-action adaptation of the post-apocalyptic DC Comics series by Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra. The tale of a cataclysm that perishes every male mammal on the planet save for one lone surviving cisgender male human, Yorick Brown played by Ben Schnetzer, revolves around survivors trying to survive and eke out all that is lost with all that can be done to build and keep up this new world order.
Warcraft fame Ben Schnetzer headlines the show as Yorick Brown, Ashley Romans, known for NOS4A2 stars as Agent 355, Olivia Thirlby, noted for Dredd plays Yorick’s sister Hero Brown, Diane Lane who is popular for Justice League, plays President Jennifer Brown and Yorick’s and Hero’s mother. Amber Tamblyn and Marin Ireland are also part of the cast. The showrunner and playwright Eliza Clark has written the first two episodes of the series. And, in all probability, Louis Friedberg will direct them. The whole first season, however, will be shouldered by women directors. As per a feature by Variety about the start of production of the series, that came out in October last year, it was noted that ‘all episodes of season one will be directed by women.’ It also mentioned that the department heads, such as the costume designer, the production designer, casting director, editors, and stunt coordinator will largely be women too.

‘This is a man’s world, but it would be nothing, nothing without a woman’, rings the trailer in James Brown’s refrain. From the higher-ups to the everyman, every man is shown dropping dead. The female president is told that all power plants are shutting down. Ashley Roman’s Agent 355 says before she meets Yorrick, ‘Somewhere is the answer to how all of this happened and how we fix it.” Yorrick, termed as the ‘reproductively interesting man’, has to join hands with the ‘hungry, angry, terrified’ women survivors to recreate a world from the ashes of the rubble and ruin all around. While the trailer is too short a peek to glean the overarching trope of the series, enough hints are dropped for a gender-positive, rather even a feminist tale waiting to unfold.
Clark, Nina, Jacobson, and Brad Simpson of Color Force, and Nellie Reed have bankrolled the project, while Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Melina Matsoukas, and Vaughan are the executive producers of the project.
