Randy Orton Auditioned For Deadpool 2

Wrestlers from the world of WWE transitioning into Hollywood is not a new phenomenon; we've seen many of the greats do it. It's also not surprising that they gravitate towards superhero roles—you can see it for yourself. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is Black Adam, Dave Bautista is Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy and John Cena plays Peacemaker in his standalone show. But did you know that another iconic wrestler almost made it into Deadpool 2, starring Ryan Reynolds? Yes, it was none other than Randy Orton. You read that right—The Viper, who has also ventured into acting, actually auditioned to play Cable in the sequel to the Merc with a Mouth's standalone film. However, he didn't make the cut, and he's now opening up about the experience.

Randy Orton on Deadpool 2 Audition

For those who may not know, Randy Orton, aka The Viper, made his acting debut with 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded which was well-received and gave him the validation he needed to continue in the field. The 6.5-foot-tall wrestler, though with limited options, made decent choices as he went on to star in Countdown, Changeland, Shooter, and Condemned 2. However, that doesn't mean he always got the roles he wanted. For instance, he auditioned to play Cable in Deadpool 2.

In a sit-down interview with fellow WWE icon Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton discussed his acting career, including his attempt to join the cast of Deadpool 2. At the time, the franchise was under 20th Century Fox, and Orton revealed that he was one of many who auditioned to play the role of Cable but ultimately didn't make the cut.

In case you don't recall, Cable is a character who travels from the future to the past to stop Firefist and prevent him from killing his wife and daughter in the future. Cable was a pivotal part of the story and a catalyst for much of the movie's action. While discussing his audition for the role, Randy Orton said as per Comic Book Movie, "So, I do auditions here and there. I remember I got an audition early on when I finally got some representation in that industry. I think Deadpool 2? Cable. I read for Cable, and in my head, boy, I was gonna be Cable. I was gonna be Cable. And I was like, 'This is it.'"

Randy Orton on Josh Brolin Playing Cable

Ultimately, the role of Cable went to Josh Brolin, who is also known for playing Thanos in the MCU. Reflecting on this, Randy Orton said, "Nope, no callback. No nothing. Yeah, thanks. Josh Brolin gets it. Of course, Josh Brolin gets it [and] kills it," Orton added. "I think I realized then, 'Oh, okay, I can send in these auditions, but I'm a pro wrestler.' I really enjoy being a pro wrestler and everything it's given me. I don't think I'll ever leave this place [WWE]."

You can catch all the WWE action on SonyLIV. Deadpool 2 is available to watch on Disney+ Hotstar. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
