The veteran actor's portrayal of Chellam sir in The Family Man 2 has won many admirers since its release.
He was part of nearly 25 films as an actor, two films as a director, but Uday Mahesh had no clue about the fame he was to enjoy after essaying the role of Chellam sir in The Family Man 2. Chellam, a former officer at TASC, is a character that has a solution for almost anything and everything in the show. Some viewers have even hilariously commented that he's even better than Google. The sudden burst of fame has come as a surprise for Uday Mahesh.
"The popularity for this character has been unprecedented. It feels wonderful. I had no clue that Chellam would remain so much in the minds of the audiences even when I dubbed for it," Uday Mahesh said in an interaction with News18. When asked about the backstory of the character, he preferred to play it safe, adding, "Chellam is a mysterious character. I guess it would be best for the makers to give his side of the story later."
Stating that he had received the brief about the character only on sets, Mahesh further told the publication, "They informed that Chellam was a retired spy who was very conscious about guarding his identity. I only did what Raj and DK asked me to do. They are the ones who'll tell you the equation between him and Srikant." He's surprised that acts like changing phones and SIM cards have caught the imagination of audiences. "It's something that's always expected of a spy. However, he no longer wants to lead that life and prefers to bide his time at temples."
Uday is extremely glad about the requests for a Chellam spin-off and says it would be an honour to step into Chellam sir's shoes again.
