Drums rolling! In a historic development, the Women's Reservation Bill has been tabled by the Union Government in the Lok Sabha at the new Parliament building today. The bill seeks to reserve one-third of seats in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women, reviving a bill pending for 27 years for want of consensus among parties.

According to news agency PTI, the government has articulated its commitment to fostering enhanced female involvement in state and national policymaking. This initiative aligns with the overarching objective of propelling India towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2047. The proposed legislation will bear the name "Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam" symbolizing the recognition and empowerment of women.

Reactions by Bollywood celebrities

Soon after this bill got tabled in the Lok Sabha today, several Bollywood celebrities began reacting to the development. National award-winning actor Kangana Ranaut expressed to ANI, “This is a wonderful idea! This is all because of our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this government, and his (PM Modi's) thoughtfulness towards the upliftment of women."

“It is a historic day for the nation. It was the first session of the Parliament. The entire session was dedicated to ensuring women's empowerment. All credit to the Indian government,” Kangana additionally told India Today as well.

Actress Esha Gupta, who recently marked her attendance at the Cannes Films Festival 2023, graced the newly inaugurated Parliament building and spoke about the bill in detail. She said to news agency ANI, “It is a beautiful thing that PM Modi has done. It's a very progressive thought...This Reservation Bill will give equal powers to women... It's a big step for our country. PM Modi promised it and delivered it..."

What does the bill seek to deliver?

Almost all political parties have supported the bill. However, its implementation may still take some time and is unlikely to be in force for the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024, reports PTI. This is because the reservation will come into effect only after a delimitation exercise is completed.
