Those who have been following Tamil cinema know that the industry has been going through a lull. Contrary to Malayalam cinema, which has churned out one blockbuster after another, Tamil cinema has taken a backseat in the first half of the year.

Enjoy 20 OTT platforms streaming South content including SunNXT, aha, ManoramaMAX, ZEE5 and more at just ₹75.

However, many on social media are in support of the fact that Maharaja, the recently released Tamil film starring Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role, has broken the dry spell, both in terms of content and box office figures.

Has Maharaja ended Tamil cinema’s dry spell?

Unlike the Malayalam film industry, which gave hit after hit like Premalu, Aadujeevitham, Aavesham and Manjummel Boys, Tamil cinema has been staggering to deliver a proper hit. While 2023 saw some fantastic films, the first half of 2024 has been rather mediocre.

With the Maharaja release, it may be said that the lull has ended, with many loving the film. Maharaja is Vijay Sethupathi’s 50th film and is written and directed by Nithilan Saminathan. While one may have to wait a few days to see how the film is performing at the box office, many have taken to say that the film’s content has surpassed expectations. However, Maharaja is also facing polarising opinions, with a section of the audience not liking it.
