Deepika Padukone was an integral part of the first Kalki 2898 AD and turns out the producers have now confirmed her participation in the sequel.
One of the biggest movies of 2024 has undoubtedly been the Pan-India Nag Ashwin directorial Kalki 2898 AD. Whether or not viewers connected with the film, its success has been undeniable, leading to the announcement of a sequel that is already in the works, with portions filmed during the production of the first movie. The franchise has sparked widespread curiosity among fans of the actors and director, who are eager to see where it goes next. However, one of the most pressing questions has been whether Deepika Padukone will reprise her role as the mother in the sequel. While the movie strongly hints at her return, developments in her personal life have led fans to wonder if she might delay her comeback.
The producers have now officially addressed the speculation. For the unversed, Deepika plays Sumathi, a woman carrying a fetus in a dystopian world where natural childbirth is no longer possible. Her unborn child is none other than Kalki, the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu, making her crucial to the story’s progression. To protect her, Ashwatthama is awakened and vows to ensure her safety. Producers have confirmed that Padukone will indeed return for the sequel and will appear in key scenes.
At IFFI Goa, in an interaction reported by News 18 producers Priyanka and Swapna expressed their excitement about Kalki 2898 AD’s stellar performance, saying, “It’s good enough for us to make a solid part two.” They further shared, “30-35 percent of part two has already been shot. Kalki 2 will have a big international release.”

They also mentioned her character would continue to have a significant journey in the sequel. “She will still be the mother in some part of the film,” they said, confirming that Padukone remains integral to the franchise. This marks her return to the big screen after welcoming her daughter, Dua.
Director Nag Ashwin had previously confirmed that parts of the sequel were shot alongside the first installment, which gives the makers a considerable advantage in moving the project forward. It is possible that the scenes featuring Deepika Padukone were filmed in advance. Producers have also stated that the sequel is being crafted for a grand international release, aiming to match and possibly surpass the scale of its predecessor.
