Directed by Roby Varghese Raj, Kannur Squad is based on the real experiences of a wing in the Kerala Police Force
Since the film’s release on September 28, the Mammootty-starrer police procedural Kannur Squad has been receiving overwhelming responses across the state. After its performance at the box office on Day 1, more screens and showtimes were added, both in Kerala and at other places. Directed by Roby Varghese Raj the film revolves around the real-life experiences of a group of nine police officers, known as the ‘Kannur Squad’, making it an investigative thriller. Now, the makers have shared a picture of the actual ‘Kannur Squad’ officers, posing with the cast and crew of the film at a movie theatre. The social media post reads, “When the REAL LIFE Kannur Squad came to witness the REEL LIFE Squad.”
The film Kannur Squad is based on real events
Kannur Squad is a crime investigation unit formed by S Sreejith while he was serving as Superintendent of Police in Kannur district of Kerala. According to screenwriters, Muhammed Shafi and Rony David Raj (who has also acted in the movie), they met all the officers in the squad and wrote the screenplay based on their real-life experiences.

It was in 2018 when the writers first attempted to get in touch with the police officers. They eventually agreed after recognising Rony as an actor. During their conversations, the officers shared details about the different cases they had investigated. The writers were particularly interested in one case that captured their attention. The ‘Kannur Squad’ originally had nine members, but the film narrows its focus to only four.
Kannur Squad’s cast and crew
Mammootty plays ASI George Martin, the lead character in the film. For the first time, the actor is playing a police officer below the rank of a sub-inspector in a film. The other key characters in the film are played by Vijayaraghavan, Azeez Nedumangad, Shabareesh Varma and Sunny Wayne.

Sushin Shyam, who is known for Bheeshma Parvam and Kumbalangi Nights composed the music, while Praveen Prabhakar was responsible for editing. Muhammed Rahil captured the visuals of Kannur Squad, which was filmed in various locations of Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
