The art of filmmaking is always fascinating, especially when the film in question is an adrenaline-pumping action thriller where the world must be saved, a plane is hijacked, or someone has to risk their life. The behind-the-scenes trivia is something we’re always curious to know. We all want to see how certain shots were created. However, some of these can also be fatal, and stories of actors meeting with accidents often make the news. One such incident happened when Hollywood star Gerard Butler was on the set of Plane which streams on Lionsgate Play, and accidentally touched acid and later rubbed it on his face, feeling like he was burning alive. Yes, that's true. Read on to know everything that you should about the incident.
Back in 2023, around the release of Plane Gerard Butler, who plays the lead in the movie, appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers and spoke about his near-death experience. The actor discussed how, no matter what he is doing, he always manages to hurt himself. The two agreed on the common thought that Butler is just naturally clumsy. Later, talking about his experience while filming a scene where he was "trying to find something that's wrong with the plane before we can take off for this final sequence," he recalled.
Further discussing how he directly touched phosphoric acid, the actor said, "Now I'm sticking my hand between these two wheels, kind of pretending that I know what I'm doing. Every time I bring my hands out, they're covered in blood and green fluid, right? And I'm like, 'I don't know what this green fluid is.'"
Adding that they were shooting in Puerto Rico, Gerard Butler explained how being covered in sweat led him to rub the acid on his face. "I'm rubbing my face and, suddenly, it's in my throat. It's in my mouth. It's up my nose. It's in my eyes. It's burning my face — and I mean burning. It turns out that this is essentially phosphoric acid."
Gerard Butler went on to add how the real pilots on set watching the scene looked panicked, but the crew members deliberated whether to throw water on his face. "And I'm just, like, burning alive," he said. "It was intense." Though it burned for hours, the actor said it was good for the scenes.
