Still from Henry Cavill's interview with Josh Horowitz

The WitcherCon, hosted by Netflix and CD Projeckt Red saw a lot of announcements from the creators of The Witcher series along with exclusive interviews of the cast and crew. Based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher has been adapted for video games, a series and several other projects including a feature animated film and a hoard of exclusive merchandise.

The Witcher: Blood Origin

The Witcher creators had announced a live-action series titled, The Witcher: Blood Origin. The six-part series is a prequel to The Witcher series. The series (set 1200 years before The Witcher series in the Elven world) will focus on the origins of the fantasy world and the creation of the magically mutated Witchers along with the “conjunction of the spheres”, the time the world of humans, monsters and elves became one.

The series will star Michelle Yeoh, Sophia Brown and Laurence O’Fuarain. Sophia Brown replaced Jodie Smith-Foster as the latter backed out due to scheduling issues. Brown is set to essay the role of Eile in the same. She is an elite warrior who leaves her clan and the position as the Queen’s guardian to become a musician but is forced to return to wielding her blade when the continent is met with a reckoning of epic proportions.

Meanwhile, Michelle Yeoh is cast as Scian a sword-elf, “whose deadly quest to retrieve a stolen sacred sword will lead her on a journey that will change the outcome of the Continent”, as announced by Netflix. O’Fuarain will play the role of Fjall, “a warrior who finds himself fighting beside the most unlikely of allies as he carves a path of vengeance across a continent in turmoil”.

Filming is set to begin in the UK in August. No date has been announced yet for the release of the series.
