All About Christopher Nolan The Odyssey Adaptation

While Universal Pictures, right before the holiday, confirmed that Christopher Nolan is yet again reuniting with them after their Oscar-haul film Oppenheimer, how does one process a project that stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and others together in the same film? The movie that has probably given cinephiles a lot of sleepless nights by now is one of the most discussed films across the globe as we speak. Add to it that a confirmation on it came right before the West was getting into the holiday mood and gave them something to be excited about. It is said that the movie is based on the cult literature piece The Odyssey by Homer, and that has kept us all thinking about what exactly this series of books means. Well, today, let's dissect what The Odyssey exactly is and what we know about the film so far. Are you ready?

What Is The Odyssey?

In case literature isn't your strongest suit and you need to Google things just like us, you have landed on the most appropriate runway right now. So Homer’s The Odyssey is a very important part of literature worldwide. It is hard to pinpoint exactly when The Odyssey was written. Most historians agree it was composed around 750–650 BCE, making it about 2,670 to 2,770 years ago. Divided between 24 books and preceded by The Iliad it tells the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, spanning a decade as he travels home after the Trojan War. It is on this journey back home that he comes across a lot of perils and discovers the fate of his crewmates.

The story has six major characters, and they are Telemachus (Odysseus' s on), Penelope (Odysseus' wife), Athena, Circe, Poseidon, and Zeus. The first printed Greek version of the story dates back to 1488, which makes it a very old and historic piece of art. Over the centuries, The Odyssey has become one of the most studied, adapted, and dissected stories. It was adapted into a silent movie in 1911 by Giuseppe de Liguoro. It was followed by 1954's Ulysses with Kirk Douglas and the 2000 Coen Brothers comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou?

There are no details about how Christopher Nolan is approaching the story. Whether he makes it a complete period piece or adds a twist like most of his movies is one of the highest mysteries, and it will only be solved slowly once the movie goes on floors and is near release. There are no details on who plays what part among the main six characters from the starry ensemble the filmmaker has curated.

The Cast!

So far, Christopher Nolan, for The Odyssey adaptation, has hired Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. Talking about their history with the filmmaker, Damon is fresh out of the Oppenheimer frenzy as he played Lt. General Leslie Groves in the film. He was also seen in Interstellar in a brief role. Pattinson was a part of Tenet as Neil. Hathaway has worked with Nolan on two films, including Interstellar where she played an astronaut, and The Dark Knight Rises, where she embodied the iconic Catwoman.

The Filming Of The Odyssey

There are no confirmed details about the same, but the last we heard, the movie goes on floors in 2025 and will be shot on long schedules. Both Tom Holland and Zendaya will be shooting for Spider-Man 4 alongside this film, as both are scheduled to release a week apart in 2026. Meanwhile, it is said that Nolan will be filming the movie across the world and that too with brand-new IMAX filming technology. Nolan has slowly become the topmost brand ambassador for IMAX as he has shot Oppenheimer Dunkirk, Tenet, and Interstellar with IMAX cameras.

Release Date

Christopher Nolan is writing and producing the film with his wife, Emma Thomas. Set to go on floors in 2025, the movie is set to release on the big screen on July 17, 2026. Interestingly, the filmmaker has released Oppenheimer Dunkirk, The Dark Knight, and Inception all in the same month.
