Reincarnation dramas are not at all new to Telugu cinema. While it was ANR's 1964 release Mooga Manasulu that set the template for reincarnation romances in the industry, every major Telugu star has been associated with such dramas in their careers, right from Krishna to Sobhan Babu to Nagarjuna. After a brief gap, the Nani, Sai Pallavi starrer Shyam Singha Roy has re-ushered this trend.

In terms of novelty, there's very little one can do to change the familiar tropes associated with the genre. Shyam Singha Roy is no exception to this. Noted character artiste Rohini Molleti shared one such similarity between Shyam Singha Roy and a 1976 film titled Devudu Chesina Bommalu, in which she was a child actor.

"Did anyone of you watch Devudu Chesina Bommalu, that released in 1976? As 8yr old I did a Telugu film “Devudu Chesina Bommalu’ Mohan in his rebirth goes in search of wife Jaya. Watched #ShyamSinghaRoyonnetflix," she tweeted recently. The film, starring Murali Mohan and Jayasudha in key roles, is a drama where couple is separated at a point of time in their lives, while the male lead is reborn and goes in search of his wife.

Shyam Singha Roy's story too revolves around a social reformer, who's reborn as a filmmaker, and unites with his better half from his past, Rosie. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film is currently streaming on Netflix. Rahul Ravindran, Krithi Shetty, Abhinav Gomatam, Leela Samson, Jisshu Sengupta and others essay important roles in the drama that released in all South Indian languages on December 24.
