The Rebel, a 2017 South Korean drama that stars Yoon Kyun-sang, Chae Soo-bin, Vehid Abdullahi, Kim Sang-joong, Kim Ji-suk, and Lee Hanee in lead roles, is like a Korean Robin Hood tale.
The series will be available to stream on Playflix and OTTplay Premium in Hindi and Korean with English subtitles starting August 11. It is set in the Joseon Dynasty, where Hong Gil-dong steals from the rich to give to the poor.
What is The Rebel about?
The series is set during the reign of the popular tyrant King Yeonsangun. Gil-dong, the son of Hong Ah Mo Gae, a servant, has no social standing and is, therefore, turned down for any legitimate job. He goes on to form a group of smugglers, of which he's the leader. But the intentions of this gang are good.
Gil-dong and his gang of men win over the hearts of commoners since they only steal from the rich and distribute this wealth among the poor.
His contemporary, Yi Yung, goes on to become the tyrannical King Yeonsangun, who makes the lives of the common people a living hell. The struggle between these two men demonstrates the qualities that a true leader needs.
The series follows how Gil-dong, who manages to survive in a hostile and tyrannical kingdom, fights against the powerful elites, winning hearts along the way.
The Rebel is also a love story, for it is also the story of Jang Nok-su, the king's faithful consort, who, unknown to everyone else, is unable to forget her first love: Gil-dong.
Interesting trivia about the series:
- The roles of the lead actors were first offered to Nam Goong Min and Ji Sung, who were later replaced by Yoon Kyun-sang.
- Another English title for The Rebel is Rebel: Thief of the People.
- It won several awards, including the Top Excellence Awards and Grand Prize at the 10th Korea Drama Awards, Best Supporting Actress at The Seoul Awards, Drama of the Year and Top Excellence Award at the 2017 Asian Television Awards, and Best New Actor at the 36th MBC Drama Awards.
